AMC Part 1 Retake Policy

Can You Retake AMC Part 1?

Yes. If you do not pass the AMC Part 1 examination, you are permitted to reattempt. The AMC does not currently publicise a fixed maximum number of attempts. Each reattempt requires a new application and full payment of the exam fee — there is no discounted rate for subsequent attempts.

A failed attempt is not uncommon, and it does not disqualify you from the pathway. What matters is how you use the time between attempts. Candidates who analyse their result, identify what went wrong, and restructure their preparation typically perform significantly better on a second attempt. Those who repeat the same approach rarely do.

Waiting Periods Between Attempts

As of the most recent publicly available information, the AMC does not publish a fixed mandatory waiting period between MCQ attempts. However, this can change, and the AMC reserves the right to set or adjust waiting periods at any time. Always check the AMC website or your result correspondence for the current policy before rebooking.

Regardless of whether a formal waiting period applies, rebooking immediately after a failed attempt is rarely the right decision. Most candidates who fail need a minimum of 3–6 months of structured re-preparation to address the gaps that caused the initial result. Rushing a reattempt without changing your approach typically produces a similar outcome — at a cost of another AUD $2,920.

Use the time between attempts to:

  • Review your scaled score to gauge how far you were from the pass mark (250 on the 0–500 scale) — a score of 230 requires a different re-preparation intensity than a score of 180
  • Identify which areas of the blueprint were weakest, using your question bank performance data if available
  • Follow a structured study plan that addresses the specific gaps, not a repeat of your previous approach
  • Read the Common Mistakes and Preparation Strategy pages to restructure how you study, not just what you study
  • Build practice question volume with a question bank aligned to the AMC blueprint

Fees for Retakes

Each attempt at AMC Part 1 is charged at the full current exam fee. As of the most recent published information, the fee is AUD $2,920 per attempt. This is non-refundable and applies identically to first attempts and reattempts — there is no reduction for candidates who have previously sat the exam.

The cumulative cost of multiple attempts is significant. Two attempts total AUD $5,840; three total AUD $8,760 — before accounting for study materials, lost work time, and the opportunity cost of delayed registration. This is one of the strongest practical arguments for not sitting the exam until you have objective evidence of readiness, and for investing in a thorough re-preparation plan between attempts rather than rebooking quickly.

Check the AMC fees and charges page for the latest fee schedule before applying.

How to Reapply

The reapplication process follows the same steps as a first attempt:

  1. Log in to your AMC account — Use your existing AMC candidate portal. You do not need to create a new account or repeat primary source verification (PSV) — your eligibility from the initial application carries forward.
  2. Apply for a new exam authorisation — Submit a new authorisation request through your AMC portal. If prompted, indicate that this is a reattempt.
  3. Pay the exam fee — The full fee (currently AUD $2,920) must be paid to complete the application.
  4. Schedule your exam — Once the authorisation is approved, it is valid for 12 months. During that window, you book a specific date and Pearson VUE test centre. Choose a date that gives you enough time to complete your re-preparation plan — do not book a date based on when you want to be ready; book based on when you will be ready.

For the step-by-step registration process, see the AMC Registration Guide. For what to expect at the test centre, see the Exam Day Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a maximum number of attempts for AMC Part 1?

The AMC does not publish a maximum number of attempts. You can reattempt provided you meet eligibility requirements and any waiting period. Each attempt requires a new application and fee.

Do I need to wait before retaking?

The AMC may impose a waiting period between attempts. The length is set by the AMC and can change. Your result letter or the AMC website will state the current requirement.

Will I get feedback on my failed attempt?

The AMC may provide limited feedback (e.g. pass/fail and sometimes performance by area). Check your result notification and the AMC website for what is available.

Should I change my preparation for a retake?

Yes. Repeating the same approach often leads to the same result. Use the Common Mistakes and Preparation Strategy pages, target weak areas, and follow a structured plan with plenty of practice questions.
